Day 17 to 19

Day 17  Monday -  After a bit of a sleep in we arose and had a coffee before heading down to the springs for a wake up swim, at 32 – 34 degrees it doesn’t quite wake you up like a cool pool but a morning swim is just divine. After dragging ourselves out of the springs we headed up and prepared some lunch while John and Mitch once again tried their luck with the Rod. Ange Josie Thomas and I headed into town to have a look at the supermarket and headed out to Bitter Springs again to get some photos.  Photos taken, we headed back to camp and relaxed for a while before we decided to once again head back to bitter springs for another float and swim.  Nearing 5.00pm we decide that we better go back to camp and have some tea along with an Ale or 2 of course. After tea the boys once again took the opportunity for one last swim before we head off tomorrow while Ange and I hit the sack and check up on the news on Facebook and the papers.

Day 18  Tuesday – Up early today as we want to try and get to Edith Falls and get a camp. Nearing Katherine I rang Edith Falls and they couldn’t tell me if there were sites available or not but did mention that we should get there early as the school holidays had just started up here and it may be busy.   So I decide to change the plan a bit, instead of getting to Edith Falls and risking it being full we decide to go to Katherine (Nitmiluk) Gorge and stay there for 2 nights then try Edith Falls on the way further north, If we can’t get in there we will try on the way down as we would have done Katherine Gorge by then anyway. Fuelling up the cars we completed a grocery shop and headed out to the Gorge. Once there we booked in and set up camp while the boys (Yep you guessed it) hit the pool. Ange and I then went to check out Gorge tours.  There was one left at 4.00 that we could get on so we booked that and headed back and had a swim and relaxed for a while.

4.00 Oclock came around pretty quickly so we headed up to do the cruise. Ange the boys and I had done it before but it was just as spectacular as last time. A gentle cruise up the Gorge taking in the high cliffs, the serene water and the rock patterns along with the odd Freshwater Croc.  Once the cruise was over we headed back to the van for tea, No 5s tonight as its a bit late so I did Hamburgers with the lot on the Weber.  Once that was done we all just sat around and talked for a couple of hours before heading to bed.

Day 19  Wednesday – Ange and I woke around 8.30 and decided that we would sneak up to the Cafe’ and have a coffee and a bit of time without the boys. Once we got there Ange looked at the Menu and saw “Eggs Benedict”,  our favourite. So we thought bugger it lets share one and we are so glad we did. It was one of the best Eggs Benedict we have ever had Yummmm Ohhhh.
Eggs Benedict Yummmmm!!!!

After scoffing that down we headed back to everyone else and planned our day. We decided to head into Katherine and go to the Hot Springs there (As if we hadn’t had enough Hot Springs!!!!  -  Nah actually we haven’t) so off we set. Thomas has decided that he would like to do a Helicopter ride over the Gorge with his savings so we called into one place on the way to Katherine but it looked pretty average so we told him to do the one at the Camp resort.  Arriving in Katherine we found the Hot Springs and settled in for a swim, these ones were not as hot as Mataranka but were beautiful just the same so we spent a couple of hours there just lazing away in the water. As it was after lunch time we got out of the springs and sat and ate our pre packed Tuna and Salad containers that have become pretty popular on this trip. Easy to just make the salad up in the morning and add a tin of Tuna when your ready.

Lunch at Katherine Hot Springs

Lunch complete we headed back to the car and drove back into the CBD where I dropped Ange off at the supermarket while Mitch and I went and gave the car a wash. When the car was done Mitch and I snuck off to the Tackle shop for a look and was half way through when Ange rang and said she was waiting at the car wash for us!!!! Sprung bad I’m afraid.  We picked her up and headed back to camp. Once there we went and booked Thomas’s Helicopter flight which was for 8.00 tomorrow morning and because there is a minimum of 2 people I have to go with him...... Darn it  J.  Back at camp we had a rest before having 5s and then Ange and I went and had a paddle in the pool before tea.  After Tea we packed a fair bit of camp up, as we have to be at the Helicopter ride by 10 to 8 tomorrow and we want to try and get into Edith Falls tomorrow early and try and get some sites.  Now I am sitting down doing this blog and hope to get it out with pictures before I go to bed.

Day 11 to Day 16

Day 11  Tuesday – Today we are off to Alice (If I hear one more rendition of “Alice, Alice who the F is Alice I will scream) Ange, Tina and Josie have picked up on how much it annoys me and at every opportunity have taken great delight in yelling it out. So we quickly pack up and hit the road, along the way we grab some fuel at Mt Ebenezer Roadhouse where we find its 16 cents a litre cheaper than where we filled up at Curtain Springs. Continuing on 2 hours later we approach Alice when all we see is a wall of cloud and rain, Bloody hel,  we have travelled over 3000 kilometres to get Ararat weather!!!!, I look at the console and see that its 16 degrees outside and absolutely Pissing down, I am yearning for shorts and singlet weather and its F ing 16 degrees! Calling in to the G’day Mate caravan park the guy behind the counter looks at me like i’m joking when I say I want 3 caravan sites for 2 big vans and a medium size one.  To cut a long story short he shows me around and says that he has 40 vans pulling out tomorrow and if we can get by with a few small sites he will give us better ones tomorrow. In the end we ended up with pretty good sites as far as I was concerned and we stayed in them for both nights. Once we were set up I got  Facebook message from Darren House who is travelling by himself up to Darwin and is in Alice for the night, We arrange to catch up at a Tavern close by to the caravan parks  for a couple of beers. We set off into town to stock up on supplies, Groceries purchased along with a few necessities  After Tea and a shower The boys along with Josie and Tina head to the pictures to see Jurassic Park 3 while Ange, John and I head to the pub to catch up with Housey.  At the pub Housey and I have some catch up conversations  and I ask him what Wilbur (Gordon Reid) is up to as I haven’t seen him in years and he tells me that he is still in Western Australia and gives him a call, short version is we are going to catch up when we get to W.A. during the conversation I tell him he has to stop at the Daly Waters Pub (which he had planned to anyway) and have the beef and Barra for tea and listen to “Chilli” as the entertainment.  Further in the travel conversations Housey asks me if I am going to do some fishing when I get to Broome, my answer is “I hope too” when he says hang on I will set you up with a bloke I know there, another phone call later he has put me on to one of his mates in Broome that will try and take us out if he can when we get there. Talk about great timing. After a few more beers we call it a night.

Day 12  Wednesday – Today is just a settle and catch up day, Thomas heads off with John to the Truck Museum while Ange does some washing, I do some van chores and head to Bunnings to get some stuff for Josie van. Once we had finished there we drop John off with Josie and Tina to do the Royal Flying Doctors centre before we set off to catch up with an old friend from Horsham who now lives in Alice – Rod Berry. After a quick catch up with Rod we head back to the park so Ange can fold the washing while I go and wash the car. Returning from there its nearly time for tea. We have arranged to go out for tea at “Sporties Bar” with Maria Howman (Teresa’s Sister), great meal had by all and home for bed. Early rise needed tomorrow as we have to travel over 400k’s to the Devils Marbles  and arrive early before everyone else gets there as it is a popular camp which is usually full by 3.00pm.

Day 13  Thursday – I set the alarm for 6.35 and as it went off I thought “oohhh no too early” but we had arranged to leave by 7.30 to 8.00 so I hit snooze for 10 minutes. Another snooze button hit later its nearly 7.00. Finally I drag myself and Ange out of bed and we start to pack up. Boys reluctantly rise and wander aimlessly around while we get the van set to go and hit the road. Quick stop at Bunnings to get a few things and off we go, Travelling along the day warms up beautifully and we have a morning tea stop at Ti Tree before continuing on to Wycliffe Well which is supposed to be the UFO capital of Australia. Unless the Aliens have transformed into a couple of rugged looking Indigenous men I didn’t see any, although a few cars could have passed as UFO’s with the speed they were travelling along the unrestricted highway!

John grabbed some fuel and we continued the 30 extra K’s to the Devils Marbles. Arriving at the perfect time we managed to get 3 spots  beside each other as a procession of Vans followed us in. Before long it was bumper to bumper here and I was justified in dictating an early leave from Alice. Once set up we had a little explore around the Marbles before settling in for a drink. Nearing tea time I dragged the Weber out and while Ange sorted the salads, I cooked a selection of meats for everyone’s tea.
Devils Marbles

Devils Marbles

Now Hawthorn plays Adelaide tonight in the footy and much to my dismay there is no TV or phone reception so I pray for decent radio reception and as I type this up the radio fades in and out with a score every now and then.  At the end of the footy we headed off to bed for a good nights sleep, have to be up for an early start tomorrow.

Day 14  Friday – With such a big day ahead today (another 500 + K’s) and needing to get to Daly Waters as early as possible to get a site at the Pub we rose nice and early and walked up to watch the sunrise on the Marbles. Once again its a beautiful sight!
Devils Marbles at Sunrise

For those of you that are avid “Upthemiddle and Roundthewest” readers you will find that I am running out of adjectives to describe all the wonderful places and sights we are seeing. So please bear with me when I use Fantastic, Magnificent, Glorious, Beautiful, Gorgeous,  lovely etc etc over and over again because it seems that on every turn there is some different place that needs describing.

Setting off up the highway we travelled to Tennant Creek where we refuelled the cars and continued on for a couple of hours to Renner Springs where we stopped for brunch, Ange cooked up some Hotdogs which were devoured by the boys in no time. Back on the road we continued for another couple of hours until we hit Daly Waters. Now those that have been there will know what I am talking about when I say there is no other Pub like it, it is something straight out of a Slim Dusty song crossed with a Back Packers hostel for Grey Nomads. Booking in we were directed to our sites. Thank God we got here when we did, as another hour and the place was Chock a Block full.  Previously at the Devils Marbles we ran into a Bloke and his daughter and son in law whom we had met at Coober Pedy for a chat, during the conversation they mentioned that they too were going to Daly Waters so we arranged to grab a table with them for tea and as we were booking in they caught up with us and said that 7.30 was the booking time for the “Beef and Barra”. After setting up the boys hit the pool whilst Ange and I sat and had a drink with John before deciding to unhook and go back to the Servo on the highway and fill up in prep for the morning. On the way back John and I dropped into the WW2 Airstrip that is nearby, Walking in to the Hangar we were disappointed to find all the pictures and memorabilia and information about the place had been removed. Returning to the Pub we had a shower and got sorted for tea. At the Bar we sat around and had a drink waiting for our meals, Tracy, Michael and Lindsay (The people we met at Coober Pedy) arranged our table so we joined them for a chat. It wasn’t long before our names were called to collect our food, Ange and I had straight Barra but both boys chose the Beef and Barra combo. Once again we were not disappointed the meal was magnificent and plenty to fill the plate too. Mitch and Thomas returned to the bar and played pool with a couple of blokes they met earlier whilst the rest of us continued our conversations with our new found friends.  About 10.30 we decided to call it a night and I wandered into the main bar to find out how the boys were going. Mitch was a bit P!ssed and Thomas was in his element, Mitch assured me that he had 1 beer to come and then they would be back so Ange and I walked back to the van and got into bed. Midnight came and neither of the boys had returned so I got dressed and wandered down to find Mitch and Thomas still there although the bar had shut and they were just standing around chatting. Dragging them off to bed I once again tried to get settled.

Day 15  Saturday – Planning to hit the road around 7.30 I set the alarm for 6.45 only to be woken by Thomas at 6.20 which is unusual as its usually me kicking them out of the swags to get going. So we got up and started to pack up. Walking outside at 7.00 Josie, Tina and John were ready to go!   Ange and I quickly finished packing up while Mitch had a sobering shower. Once he returned we got going, only 170 K’s to drive today, felt like a quick trip to the shops before arriving at Mataranka. Booking in we were pretty lucky to get some pretty good camp sites as there weren’t many available, pays to arrive early it seems. Once we were set up we had a bite to eat before heading down to the hot springs for a swim, ah how bloody good is this – 28 degrees in the sun and water at about 34, bloody beautiful.

Floating around for an hour or so we hopped out and went for a walk along the boardwalk and had a look at the river, signs were up saying - No Swimming, most likely due to a Saltwater Croc sighting! I wasn’t going to try my luck again with regards to swimming with crocs so we had a look around from the land and then returned to the Hot Springs. Thomas decided that he would keep swimming at the Hot Springs for a while so Ange and I went back to the van and sorted a few things before Ange cooked up a tea of Tuscan Meatballs (sausages) and oriental fried rice.  5’s was at Josie’s tonight so we wandered down to her site and had drinks and nibbles before tea.  Tea was had around 6.30 then the boys went back for a swim while Ange and I cleaned up. Around 7.40 we walked down to get the boys as the Whip Cracking show was about to start, Apparently this was the entertainment show for the night so we thought we would wander down and have a look. Not expecting much, but this guy was good he cracked whips in time with music along with a few other tricks including cracking whips that were on fire, I was impressed anyway!  At the end of the show we wandered back to the van and Ange had a shower whilst I did a bit more blog.

Day 16  Sunday -  Tod ay was sleep in day, stayed in bed till about 10.00 before getting up for a coffee with Tina and John. Once we were organised we grabbed our fishing gear and Mitch, John and I set off down the road to the Roper River where we cast a few lures with no success, not to worry “A bad days fishin beats a good days workin”. Getting back about 1.30 we grabbed some lunch that Ange had made for us and scoffed that down so we could go for a swim at Bitter Springs which is just down the road. Bitter springs is a natural hot spring river that you can just hop in and float down river to the last set of steps, hop out, walk back to the start and go again. We brought with us some noodle chairs that are ideal for this. After floating down river 4 or 5 times I went and found the boys that were up the top end of the river area. They had got the goggles out and had found an underwater cave of sorts, well it was where the weeds and plant life had formed a canopy on the water and if you dived down there was a really clear water cave that they swam through and popped up in pockets where there were no weeds. Of course there is no show without punch so I grabbed my sports cam and went for a swim through the cave a few times. Filming as I went.

Once the swimming was done we headed back to camp where there was a nice roast pork cooking whilst we swam. Back at camp I am updating this whilst having a couple of cans and everyone else is “Chillaxing” coz that’s just how we roll on this trip LOL.

Once the Roast was devoured we sat around for a while chatting before setting off down to see the boys who were once again having a night swim. When we arrived Mitch told us that someone had spotted a Croc down at the end of the boardwalk so Ange and I went for a look, when we got there at the bottom of the swimming steps was one of the biggest freshwater crocs I had ever seen. It was around 2 metres long and was quite large round the belly so we took a couple of photos and headed back to drag the boys home for the night.

Day 9 to Day 10

Day 9  Sunday – Last night after I completed the written part of the blog I was loading the photo’s when the laptop went flat, so Ange hopped into bed and Thomas sat watching Terminator II, I also decided that bed was calling.

Yesterdays walking and climbing took a bit out of us so this morning we had a bit of a sleep in when about 9.00am  John Texted to say good morning (In other words get up ya lazy bastards). Ok up and at em we got, Packing the van and getting a gas bottle filled before pulling into a site with water and we all filled our vans. Setting off once more we headed to Kings Canyon. Stopping at Curtain Springs for fuel, @ 1.98 a litre mind you it didn’t take long to rack up a $160 fuel bill!!!!

Back on the road we decided to stop after about an hour for lunch but we missed the wayside stop, continuing on we were looking for another when we came across an SES road block, apparently a car had rolled over on the side of the road ahead and they were waiting for a helicopter to land to convey an injured person to hospital. Well might as well have some lunch as we could be here for a while.    Lunch had we sat for a while longer before the Police decided to clear some banked up traffic and let us through. We are starting to feel like “shit Magnets” first the fallen climber and now a car accident, lets hope that’s all of Emergency services we get to see for the rest of the trip.

Arriving at the Kings Canyon campground without any further issues we booked in and set up for the night.  Camp set up, Showered, drill batteries plugged in for a charge and a beer in my hand I sat down with Tina, John, Ange and Josie for a drink when a resident Dingo decides to waltz on by. By now I was missing Ace my wonder dog and thought of giving this one a pat but suddenly remembered Azaria Chamberlain so offered up one of the boys as a gift but No joy they wouldn’t fit in its mouth!!!.

As the sun was nearing its setting time, we wandered up to the sunset lookout to watch the different color transformations on the ridge that forms part of Kings Canyon.  It’s is just fantastic to look at what this beautiful country has to offer, the effect that the sun going down, shining on this range is just something that photos can’t show.  I will add some to this blog but they just don’t do it justice. There is only one way to really see this show and that is live.

Before you know it the sun has gone and its starting to get dark, Tea still needs to be cooked so Thomas drags out the Weber and sets about cooking some chops while Ange does some scalloped potatoes  and vegies. Food, Beer, Great scenery and fantastic weather, what more could you ask for. Up at the Outback BBQ which is one of the restaurants here there was a some free live entertainment. A bloke by the name of Rod Dowsett who is a country and western singer and songwriter was putting on a show so Ange, Josie the boys and I wandered up for a drink and a listen. Now I am not really into Country and Western but listening to this guy live was really good. Josie who is a C & W fan bought 3 of his CD’s and Mitch chimed in and got 1. During a break Mitch Thomas and I went for a game of Pool. I let Mitch beat me (cough cough) so he then played Thomas before coming back and watching the rest of the show. Home to bed soon after and off to sleep, that is, until the middle of the night when I was woken to the sound of Dingoes Howling. Now normally I get Pissed off when woken up at ungodly hours of the night but to hear these creatures howling in their natural habitat is something to admire. Not quite as musically tuned as our C & W singer but something to be amazed at.

Day 10  Monday - Next morning we arose and packed up ready to head to the Canyon, The sun was shining and it was looking at being quite warm. Arriving at the carpark we filled the camelpack and set off on the Kings Creek walk which is a 2.6 Klm return walk up the centre of one of the Canyons. This walk was pretty easy and it highlighted the vegetation and the sediment of the rock formations. Nice stroll but the best was yet to come, returning from that one we started to Tackle “The Rim Walk” now the sign says that it is 6.4 Klm return and its a “Moderate walk” with a 3 – 4 hour return time.
Kings Canyon

Ange, the boys and I have done this one before back in 2011 and remember it as a big highlight of our trip so we were keen to do it again. Josie hadn’t done it before and was keen to tackle it but wasn’t so sure when confronted with the sharp rise and steps at the start, True to her word she had said she would try and turn back if it became too strenuous so with Thomas helping her we climbed the 500 + steps to the top of the first ridge. This may sound easy but trust me it is quite a challenge to get to here, from here we started to follow the track and take in the gorgeous rock formations that make up this magnificent place. Arriving at the first of the edge lookouts you see the whole canyon and it takes your breath away at how beautiful this place is, When we get there we hear the usual Cooee echo’s that usually are yelled out when you find a place that echo’s. So true to form I yell out “I bought a Jeep” which brought about a lot of laughter from those around us. Mitch just laughed and said “Dickhead”. Well I thought it was funny!
Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon

Continuing on we were once again blown away at how great this place is, high cliffs strange rock formations and vegetation growing in places that you just can’t imagine. Half way along you walk down a set of steps and cross a bridge that overlooks “The Garden of Eden” which is a tight canyon with lots of plants and waterholes. Across the bridge there is a 600 metre side walk that takes you to one of the waterholes, here we took some photos and I dipped my Durag (my head sock ) in the cold water and cooled off before returning up the steps back to the top. By this time I had pretty much had a gutful of bloody steps and stairs.

Nearing the completion of the walk (about a Klm to go) Josie started to feel sick and dehydrated and needed a rest so Ange stayed with her while  I pushed on back to the Van and sent Thomas running back with a fresh bottle of cold water. I rehydrated myself and then set off back to help her finish the walk. Once back at the Car park I switched of my Run keeper GPS App on my phone and it said that I had completed 7.36 Klms for the trip and that didn’t include the 1 k walk back to help Josie or the first k on the creek walk.  A good 10 k trek of various inclines. My Legs were saying 100 k so not sure if the app works or not. Back at the car park we cooked up some 2 minute noodles for lunch (not really a gourmet lunch) but after such a huge walk anything is welcome. Lunch completed we set off for our next camp which was called Salt Creek rest area about 120 Klms away, a short drive considering what we have done lately. Along the way we came across a very new model Caravan about  $60 to $70,000 worth on the side of the road that had obviously been in an accident and rolled over a few times it turns out a woman was driving along and the van started to sway and she didn’t know how to get out of it and she ended up rolling both the car and the van. If only she had the ALKO ESC that saved me so well a couple of days earlier.  Arriving at Salt Creek  we found a few other campers set up so we found the best parks that could fit all 3 of us in and set up a basic camp for the night. Bugger me dead just as we finished setting up it was 5’s time so we sat down with a little spread of Chips, Dips, Salami, olives, Cheeses and  Bickies. Of course we had to wash all that down so out came the Beer and wine as the sun started set over the bush.

Thomas decided he needed a crap and I thought well I might have one as well so I grabbed the shovel as there is no toilets at this camp and off we went. Now I just think that it is a natural bodily function but to the others it  provided some laughs and jokes amongst the others as we wandered over the hill. I dug Thomas a hole and gave him some paper as I continued further on and completed what was required. Arriving back at camp the jokes continued to flow at our expense. Things like why did you take so long – Did you get “Bogged”,  I bet the view was “Crappy”, Glad you dragged the flies away from the food, did you dig separate holes? or did you share one back to back etc etc.    Just as Tina took a mouthful of her drink I said “Ok enough of the shitty jokes” and she couldn’t help herself she sprayed a whole mouthful everywhere.    Reading this, it may be one of those “you had to be there” moments but there were laughs all round. Tea was again a BBQ with some nice Scotch fillet cooked on the trusty Weber, Thomas is becoming quite the Chef with the Weber under my expert Guidance, Beer in hand I impart my knowledge while Thomas mans the tools. Life is pretty tough here in the outback !!!!!

Day 4 to Day 8

Day 4 to Day 8

Tuesday - Up and at em for a brekky of Bacon and Eggs, before setting off to explore Coober Pedy a bit more. First up was Fayes House, Originally it was just a hole for the mail wagon when Faye came to town as a cook. She soon quit as a cook and began her own Opal mine and purchased the Mail Wagon hole. She began to turn it into an underground house as well as work her mine looking for Opals. Short version is she became very wealthy and opened up tourism in Coober  Pedy. The house itself was amazing and the whole house was built by pick and shovel by Faye herself without the help of modern machinery. It even has its own indoor Heated Pool!!!!. (The house has made it into the top 10 must see places in Australia by Trip Advisor)

Next up, Mitch Josie and Thomas did a tour of Fayes Mine while Tina John Ange and I went up to The Big Winch for a coffee and a look over the town from the hill. Once the mine tour was finished we went down and watched a demonstration of a mine Blower (a big dirt Vacuum cleaner).

Blower Demonstration

After Lunch we went for a drive out to Crocodile Harry’s, This is where a few movie scenes have been made including Mad Max 3 Beyond Thunderdome. Once there it turned out to be a weird selection of cave rooms with graffiti all over them as well as a lot of weird art.

I think Harry was a bit of a deviate as well, as there was a lot of naked women statues as well as a lot of women’s underwear including “G” Bangers and Bra’s hanging everywhere.  In the end it was worth the $5.00 entry Harry was a Crocodile Hunter up North until it was outlawed and he moved to Coober Pedy to try and get rich. Looking at the photo’s on the walls I think that he just got laid a lot!

Once back at camp I repaired Josie’s Tyre, fuelled up the cars sat around for 5’s (drinks and nibbles around 5. Oclock).

Wednesday – Packing up early-ish we hit the road again for the long drive up the highway towards Ayres Rock.  Planning on getting as far as just east of Erldunda we stopped at Marla for a toilet stop and driver change before again hitting the bitumen to the border where we took the obligatory border crossing photo’s and moving on to Kulgera.  Here we filled the cars, had some lunch and again hit the road. As it was only 2.30 and the planned stop was only about an hour away we decided to push through to Curtain Springs where there was a free camp.
NT Border

Pulling in to Curtain Springs as dusk was about to arrive we set up camp, had a drink while cooking tea then walked over to the bar for a beer with Mitch. Mitch ordered his beer then realised (conveniently) that he had no money!!! So dad shouted of course, but only one when he found out that it was $8.10 a stubby! So off to bed for an early start.

Thursday – Up, packed and on the road to Yulara, calling in to the campground we asked for 3 unpowered sites only to be told that they didn’t have 3 together. That didn’t worry us but she then said if you wait for 2 hours I will put you in the overflow for $10 a night. A bargain we couldn’t resist, so we left and went to the tourism centre and watched a local production about a tale of the Eagle, the Crow and the Cockatoo. It was a great show with both film and live acting by a couple of local indigenous youth.  A coffee at the Cafe’ and a quick shop at the supermarket before heading back to set up camp.

Once camp was set we decided to go for a drive out to see “The Rock” The real one, not that pretend actor. Driving out I knew what to expect but for Tina, John and Josie that first time that you round the bend and see it in all its glory close up is something that can’t be described properly. Yes you see it from afar but there is one bend that you go around and the view is just amazing. Stopping at the start of the Mala walk we got out and had a look from the base, then as it was late in the arvo we decided not to climb today so we did the drive around the base and stopped at the waterfall on the eastern side, next up was the cultural centre where we browsed at the information there as well as the local art that was for sale.  Returning to camp we had 5’s, then Tea and off to bed.
The Mighty Uluru

Friday – Out of bed after a little lay in and brekky we set off to do the Mala walk with a local ranger and then to  climb the rock. Arriving just in time for the walk we noticed that the rock was closed for climbing due to a rescue in progress????. I happened to mention that maybe it was just the default closed sign! Oooops maybe not, it turns out that late the afternoon before (when we decided not to climb) that a Taiwanese tourist had decided that he would find a short cut down.  Ummmm, wrong move buddy. He managed to fall about half way down the side of the rock suffering quite horrific injuries apparently. Broken Pelvis, other broken bones, Head injuries and hypothermia as he spent all night up there alone. (down below it was very cold that night, can’t imagine what it would have been like up there like that). I think they managed to winch him out by about 5.00pm today, so that would have been about 25 or 26 hours up there with those injuries.  It took 10 hours to winch him from where he was to the top.

Back to the Mala walk,it was a 2 hour walking tour close to the base of the rock.  The Mala is a small rufous hare Wallaby that is extinct in the wild but they have a breeding program that has increased the numbers to around 250 now. The walk also included information about the Rock itself, the Anungu, the local indigenous people and the stories that they tell and their culture. The Ranger was a great story teller who was full of information and was passionate about the ways of the Anungu.

Once the walk was finished and the rock was still closed to climbing we decided to head out to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) here we did the Walpa Gorge walk, a 2 Klm trek up between a couple of the giant boulders. The sights we are seeing are the same as we saw on our last trip, but you forget how amazing this place is. Heading back towards camp we stopped off at the  Uluru sunset viewing area we got there a fraction too late and missed the best of it, Oh well we can come back tomorrow night for that one. Back to camp, tea, dishes, shower and bed.
The Olgas

Saturday – Up and keen to climb Uluru, Brekky had, lunch packed and off we head only to find that the climb was still closed. Bugger!!!! Oh well back out to the Olgas we go. This time we decide to tackle the 7.4 klm trek up through the valley of the winds. It was a very rocky hilly climb but it was amazing. I mentioned to one couple when we were on the way back that it was worth every step and I wasn’t lying. Half way round I said to myself that so many people say “I’m livin the dream”. Some say it in Jest, some say it quite lightly or without purpose. Today I could say it as fact!  I am “Livin the dream” “this is livin Daniel”. I just wish someone would fund me, to do this for the rest of my life (the travelling that is) and we are only 1 week down.

At the completion of the 7.4klms we met Tina, John and Josie at the start of the walk and headed back to the picnic area for lunch, Pre packed Tuna and salad was consumed with vigour, washed down with copious amounts of water. Time to head back and with fingers crossed the climb might just be open. Nearing the base it appeared that it was closed as there wasn’t the “Ant trail” of people clinging onto the chains so disappointment was starting to set in when I spied some people trekking up the steep climb. Ok, action stations people, get the camera, grab your phones, grab the camel pack and lets go.  Now, it all looks easy at the start but reality sets in within the first 50 metres, now I remember (2011 is coming back to me very quickly) Bloody Hell it is steep, I am sure Ange is cursing me under her breath as I push her to keep going.   I set Run keeper, (my GPS App on my phone) before I began and when I check the first time (as my legs are screaming at me), I find that we are only a 3rd of the way up. Shit, still a bit to climb yet but I don’t want to give up.  After about an hour and 20 minutes of punishment we reach the top, What a relief, what an achievement. Taking in the scenery, I can’t take the smile off my face.  A couple of Photos, a couple of quick phone calls to family and friends (Just to say that we were on top of Uluru) and the realisation that we have to get down yet!!!! Off we set and half an hour later with aching knees we reached the bottom.

In the mean time  Tina , John and Josie had prepared our 5’s and were heading to the Sunset viewing area  so we could sit and take in the glorious views as the sun set on the huge rock we had just conquered whilst enjoying a well earned beer and nibbles. Once the sun had set we packed up and headed back to camp to cook tea and complete some of this blog. One week down and many more adventures yet to come.   Stay tuned people.
